Summer Reading!

Hihi all! šŸ˜Š

Iā€™m back, and Iā€™m so very glad to see you are too.

Well, itā€™s been about two weeks, and I have another little something to share with you guys. Today, I wanted to do something fitting to the season, so that means you are about to receiveā€¦

...Summer reading recommendations!

These books all have a special place in my heart, and while they might not be for you, I hope the bookish spirit will infect you and will get you in the mood to go book hunting, because that is a job that is never complete. šŸ˜‰

First up: The Penderwicks series, by Jeanne Birdsall. Five stars. šŸ˜ŠĀ Although book three probably has the most summery vibes, book one definitely fits the bill as well! ā€œA summer tale of four sisters, two rabbits, and a very interesting boyā€.Ā  This book is such a fun one, with friendship, sisters, a faithful dog, a Latin-speaking father, and a villainous neighbor.

Content warnings for the series: childish mentions of killing, negative words similar to ā€œstupidā€, mentions of ā€œgoddessesā€, though never as if they are something anyone believes in, and more so as something imaginative.

I adore this one so much, and not just because it is definitely nostalgic. Melts a little bit. Definitely go check it out! Iā€™d recommend it for any age, but reading level is probably nine and older. šŸ˜‰

Next: 100 Days of Sunlight, by Abbie Emmons. Four stars. This bookā€¦oh, it was so good. Totally living up to its name, this (non-steamy!) YA romance is like a shaft of sun, tackling a hard topic with joy, light, and waffles.

Content warnings: there is a hefty amount of swearing and a few other similar dirty words, especially in the second POV characterā€™s chapters. It is definitely more of an ā€œolder kidsā€ book, and if this isnā€™t for you, this isnā€™t for you. But it so redeemed itself in my eyes, that I was able to overlook the CWs. šŸ˜ŠĀ There is also a mention of puberty related topics, but it is extremely brief and non-descriptive. Probably not for ages below fifteen or so. šŸ˜‰

Third: A Girl of the Limberlost, by Gene Stratton Porter. Four and a half to five stars! Romance, nature, music, beauty, family, struggle, loss, and perseverance, all packed tightly in a sweet classic about a girl who grew up near the swamp, and found a beauty there few others could see. Forced by a cruel, hardened mother to make her own way in the world, Elnora turns to the one thing she really knows to help herā€”the Limberlost, and its hidden treasures.

Content warnings: none!

Lastly,as a little something extra: Flower Fairies of the Summer, by Cicely Mary Barker. Five stars. šŸ˜ŠĀ Sweet poems of the summer flowers, told by their fairies and beautifully illustrated. For all ages.

(Note: content warnings are here for the sake of others consciences, as I do not want to offend anyone by my personal viewpoint. šŸ˜Š)

Ā

Have you read any of these books? What sort of books do you guys like to read for summer? Any recommendations to share? Comment below! šŸ˜Š

A commonplace quote! I should be having one of these featured every other post or so, so be ready for that. šŸ˜‰

ā€œI believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.ā€ ā€“Audrey Hepburn

Curiousā€”do any of you keep a commonplace? Iā€™m sure Iā€™m not the only person my age who does, but Iā€™ve never met anyone! XD

Until next time, happy reading. šŸ˜Š

I've never heard of a commonplace, but that sounds like a great idea! Although, I have some questions about portions of that Hepburn quote... we can have that conversation in person, though. šŸ˜‰ Thank you for the book recommendations. I feel like I wasted my childhood because I hated reading, so I'll have to play catch-up in my free-time as an adult. Keep them coming! šŸ˜ - Debbie

Heehee, that's alright! šŸ˜† Basically, it's just a collection of quotes (usually kept in a notebook, though I suppose you could use a document or whatever else šŸ˜‰) that either inspire you, make you think, that you agree with, or that you just plain want to remember! ā˜ŗļø I love keeping one--it's wonderful to look back on all the years I've kept mine, remembering what books I was reading at the time, etc. šŸ¤—

I would LOVE to start a commonplace but haven't gotten around to it šŸ¤

Oh, do so now! šŸ˜ All you need is a notebook (preferably cute šŸ˜‰) and something to write with! You can always transfer the quotes to a different notebook later, if you like. They are so fun to look back on! ā˜ŗļø
